Programs - Puckstopping

Puckstopping - another program offered by the best goalie / goaltending school - The Goalie Centre!
  • Goaltenders receive one-on-one instruction regarding the various techniques to stop the puck. Each session lasts one hour and the goaltender receives approximately 500 shots on goal.
  • Goaltenders will learn how to use different pieces of their equipment to protect the nine specific zones that are available to a potential shooter.
  • Goaltenders will be well prepared to handle the following types of shots once they have completed the progam:
    1. Low shots - to the right of the net; to the centre of the net; to the left of the net;
    2. Medium shots - to the right of the net; to the centre of the net; to the left of the net;
    3. High shots - to the right of the net; to the centre of the net; to the left of the net;
  • Goaltenders will also learn how to develop a plan once they have made the save. They will learn the various rules and options that are vital with respect to "stopping the play" or "keeping it going". Specifically, goaltenders will know how to:
    1. Control the puck (e.g., glove saves, freezing the puck, etc.)
    2. Direct the puck (e.g., with the leg pads, blocker, skate, and/or stick to the corner of the rink or teammate)
    3. Absorb the puck (e.g., with the leg pads, torso, blocker, glove, and/or stick to prevent unwanted and unnecessary rebounds)
    4. Square up to the puck (e.g., the ability to quickly recover from their back, belly, side or knees while continually facing the puck)
  • Goaltenders will learn when and how to take these various shot-blocking skills to different game situations (e,g. breakaways, deflections, screen shots, 2 on 1's, powerplays, etc.)

Based on the goaltenders training program, there is puckstopping at our plastic ice facility as well as actual ice facilities.

All puckstopping training is performed at Millenium Place Arena, Sherwood Park, Alberta with each goalie working with their own goalie coach and net.
